Hi,

I'm not sure what I think about this portion. I've sent in my questions to support, and would like to hear any insights to how this is intended to work.

I've found Artisteer a convenient framework that's always needed a level of modification. I now have concerns for its usability.

My above post would not be accepted until I removed the quote from Artisteer's news page about publishing online. My concerns were about that particular feature.

I shy away from the General forums because they get very rude, but this thread gives more information on the new version:
http://www.artisteer.com/?post_id=226845&p=forum_post&forum_id=9

It looks like the plugin system is gone for Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal - so Templateer doesn't work anymore, and there's no more customizing of the export.

Artisteer has always required modifications to be of full use to me, so this is majorly not a selling point. If this is how the program will operate it's not usable for my purposes anymore.

I wonder if this is just a temporary thing for 4.2 beta that they'll eventually add back in or a necessity because of their online connection requirements.

Hi, MikeC,

I think it's a permanent thing. They say part of their software is now housed on their servers and I can't see a viable separation of the program except for the export template which has already been separated in 4.1

I only played with 4.2 for only 5 minutes, and it's very disappointing. Since I am preparing a theme shop to distribute my themes, templateer is a must.

Looks like I will be using 4.1 for a long time. I have figured out how to manually fix most if not all of the bugs, both artisteer and templateer. Too bad I had blindly renewed my license a week ago, in anticipation to this crap of an upgrade. I am now truly hoping for a competing product to improve enough, so we would have a new software to do our jobs. I applauded and defended artisteer when the drastic changes came with 4.0 a year ago, but this is undefendable. I have more details in the post abland posted above.

Hi, Nick,

It wasn't a waste to renew - I discovered the plugin system fails anyway when your subscription period ends so Templateer stops working.

Like you, I've customized my export and the plugin feature introduced in 4.1 was a huge bonus that justified my needing to modify every version I've used. I'll be sticking with that version at least till my subscription expires, then go forward from there.

Nick, I feel the same way. I've seen your comments in a couple of other threads and I'm in complete agreement with all of them.

There's a lot of things I like in 4.2 but there are a few bad things that are deal-breakers. The bad completely outweigh the good.

My subscription is expiring in weeks and I'm going to hold off. I'm not completely giving up on Artisteer but, like you, I'm going to stick with 4.1 and start looking at the alternatives in a more serious way.

In the meantime, Abland and I have been talking about creating fixes and enhancement for 4.1 as well as Templateer on GitHub.

Definitely join us:

https://github.com/ArtisteerTemplateer

I think we'll move over to a private repository before we start posting code for a number of reasons but it's there now so join in.

Thanks guys, I look up to you guys a lot since you know your stuff. I'm starting to finally calm down, although I could only sleep for two hours because of this. We have managed to find all sorts of solutions and bug fixes before, I am sure when the initial shock and disappointment dies down, we will think of something. May be manually adding the templateer code to the themes. Let's wait and see if Bud will even bother with this - I wouldn't.

Abland the lack of export options is a shock, I will check it out now, and try to find any other nasty surprises and report back.

Abland, I misunderstood your statement "customizing of the export." I thought you were talking about Export->Options. That's still available, but manually actually customizing the export files is indeed not possible.

I don't think most will even notice it, but for some power users, this is a big step back, as this will take away the ability to automate many repetitive tasks. Doesn't Extensoft realize that for some of us, Artisteer is only the starting process in the theme creating process, and we actually add our own code to it, which many times is repetitive, so we need this type of customization? I'm sure they do, but they don't care, and I'm sure they will give us the silent treatment as usual.

Just noticed this! :-@

Looks like 4.2 is DOA.

There's really 3 options for us moving forward:

1) We're going to be stuck with 4.1 + Templateer for a long time so we'll have to work on creating our own fixes.

2) We'll switch to some other product...once they catch up to Artisteer. :-)

3) Extensoft will back down on this garbage, do what's right and fix things.

Not in my case Abland. My subscription had ended more than a month ago, and was able to use Templateer without any problems. If I had installed Templateer over an expired license that would had thrown me into trial mode.

If we ever get Templateer for 4.2, only God knows what will happen with expired licenses. I don't have a good feeling about either things - getting Templateer for 4.2, and keep using the software after the expiration date. Now some will say it's only $60/year, but can you imagine if the development of the product stops, as hinted in the "News" page, and we still have to pay year after year just to make templates? What happened to the promise that you can continue using the product after your subscription has ended? May be we are jumping to the wrong conclusions. Unfortunately, getting any meaningful info out of them is total waste of time. It's like the KGB is in charge now!

Another pain in the ass is that if you are not connected to the internet you can't export to WP, Joomla or Drupal.

That means you can't even do work on your local server if not connected.

Now that sucks!.

:( Clearly Artisteer has lost there way and their priorities are grossly misdirected.

I stopped using 4.2 within minutes as soon as I found out the visual editor was gone.
:-@

I regret renewing a few months ago. :-/ :

Artisteer is more concerned with their own agenda and overly paranoid about piracy. At the rate they are going, they wont have to worry about it because no one will want Artisteer in it's most recent state. :-<

They pay absolutely no attention to what their customers need or want. :*)
I am just sad they have decided to go in the direction they have, I hope someone can come up with a viable alternative at a reasonable price so us struggling web designers can afford it :-)
The time to start thinking about piracy is when they start charging over $1000 like Photoshop. Most individual designers I know have to to pirate it because it is a necessary design tool that is completely overpriced and unaffordable for the majority of freelance designers. :-@

Artisteer has remained reasonably priced for the product they deliver. Or used to. I hope they get their heads screwed on straight and re-focus their energies towards giving their clients what they ask for, :-|

They just keep shooting themselves in the foot and don;t know enough to stop. STUPID STUPID STUPID

To be fair the visual editor is back in the final 4.2 release (as far as I know), but I don't believe it's available in Templateer 4.2? At least that's the current grumblings around here. Of course if you don't need content export then you could just use WP Tuxedo - http://wpthemecity.net - but I may be a bit biased :-)

One clarification, the "new" Templateer is designed for the 4.2RC version. I have no knowledge if Bud ensured that it is entirely compatible with the final release. And since he has a curious approach to marketing, which seems to be "never say anything to anybody about anything," I do not consider Templateer to be much more than abandonware at this point.

WP Tuxedo for me!

Lot of Templateer bashers on here, and it's easy to see why. Due to the complete lack of contact and support I had all but given up on Templateer.

And then this new-fangled Tuxedo thing crops up. I read the stuff and watched the movies, but I ended up thinking ... Hang on, this is just like templateer. But without any of the cool stuff I loved, like the easy way you can add snippets and images from categories and pages.

Templateer even has most of the weird and wonderful shortcodes, button thingys, icons, fontawesome stuff. And a good responsive bootstrap grid layout if required. I just never used them.

So I've dug my old copy of templateer (for version 4.1) out the bottom drawer and am setting about creating a whole new bunch of templates.

I'll report any major bugs here if I find them, but everything seems to working very well. Most of my issues before related to timthumb and multisites. But stand alone installs seem fairly solid, so far....

to Eileen

I would recommend that bugs & issues are posted directly to the Artisteer support forums at http://www.artisteer.com/Default.aspx?p=forums

This way, what with Artisteer's newly found (permanent?) commitment to Forum participation and all, everybody (company, clients and end-users) have all the advantages of *centralizing* problems, bugs, workarounds and solutions. In addition, the - transparency - of everyone's knowlege and experience makes us all the better.

Decentralization, in your recommendation above, is a quantifiable disadvantage. It's kinda like running several networked computers and shared files without a Server - and then pretending it's all fine, works well, and we're all having a - nother - great day!

Just my nickel...

@Anakyst--100% perfect answer. The minority of confused users who expect personal company tech support on this forum certainly need to be steered to the support process.

However, for the majority of us, this centralized brain-trust can be an invaluable resource to both users and the company.

Bye bye Artisteer see you again when your developers chenge their mind! (which i think will never happen).

Wow, I've had Artiseer since the first version. It has totally made it's money back time and time again. However, I am not happy they are taking a page from Adobe's playbook. I have always liked these "forums". I think we have done a good job with moderating with out a moderator.

That said, I've gone back to using a 3.1x version, and I must say - it's just as good. It's simple and works fine.

I would like to start an open source library for people to access different CSS files that I have used to help tweak Wordpress and my Artiseer files. Would anyone else find this useful?
