Managing multiple wordpress sites?

Managing over a dozen wordpress sites is now taking up quite a lot of my time in terms of maintaining and updating the various plugins etc. I have to logon to each site and update it manually. Whilst this only takes a few minutes per site, overall it takes a couple of hours every week in total.

Does anyone here have any experience of using a more efficient way of doing this?

Hi, blue sky,

Have you looked into multisite? That's been working well for me.

Isn't Multisite only for wordpress installation on the same sub domains or sub directories eg www.wp1.mydomain.com , www.wp2.mydomain.com etc

I thought it didnt work across domains - eg www.mydomain1.com and www.mydomain2.com

I've setup a few multisites now & you can definitley update all sites / plugins from your main admin page. Not sure how else you would do it...

You can set it up as sub domains - sitea.mainsite.com or as subfolders: mainsite.com/sitea

Never used them, but there are domain-mapping options and plugins so that sitea.mainsite.com appears just as it is independent - www.sitea.com

Of course, if you're managing these sites for clients then just charge them an admin fee & stop grumbling :-D

Hi, Mike Allen,

This works excellent for mapping top level domains:

That's just how a top level domain gets pointed to the subfolder or subdomain of a multisite install.

If the subsite was blog1.multisite.com, but the domain name wanted is www.myblog.com it connects the two so the site can be found by the domain name www.myblog.com

The plugin makes it easy - enter the specific multisite blog's id and then the top level domain - save and done.

That managewp looks interesting. The Business package is what would be needed for thorough management, but the pricing for 25 sites is almost $1,000 per year. A developer could set up a multisite for that price - likely less - and there would be no recurring costs for blogs management.

WP Multisite is the way to go!
I even switched hosts in order to get this working properly.
Now all hosts support this feature and everyone has different charges for an SSL certificate.

But it sure cuts down on time.

Why don't you install it locally and see it in action?

I use ManageWP. It works really well. Very easy to set up and implement. It used to be free for a limited number of sites (maybe 10), but I think they charge for even that now. I tried to live without it but couldn't.

Do you get stressed out when you're thinking of how to manage multiple WordPress websites? If you're a online business owner who's having trouble keeping up with all of the demands that come with this daunting task then you might want to consider using a WordPress Manager. Absolutely - infinite wp. I use it to manage 126 sites. That was my biggest WP secret weapon btw, thanks Daniel for getting my secret out!!!

Multisites is a way to go, ONLY if you know what you are doing. The biggest disadvantages of multisites are that, even though you can set them in a shared hosting environment, realistically you need at least a VPS. Your customers will not be able to install their own themes and plugins - which could be a good thing too, since you will be in total control for those.

But the scariest part regarding multisites is that if the site gets hacked, or the server goes down, all of your web sites will go down at the same time - you can get wiped out with only one misfortune. Also, moving a multisite is a hassle too. Backupbuddy is the only backup/move tool that I know of, but the feature for multisites is in beta for about a year now. There could be major problems with that - (I don't use it), since that feature is not getting out of the beta state.

Infinite WP is the way to go. The only other similar tool that does what infinite wp does is managewp, but the prices are outrageous - https://managewp.com/plans-and-pricing - Infinite WP is FREE, unless you buy some premium plugins for it, which you don't have to btw...

More about managewp vs infinite wp:

500 web sites with infinite wp = FREE

500 web sites with managewp (according to their web site) = $4,536/year !!!

Thanks for the advice. I decided to checkout InfiniteWP but it seems I have to setup local server on my desktop PC which is a something I would rather not do. Any suggestions?

I also found a great review at PCPro, http://www.pcpro.co.uk/realworld/381832/taking-the-stress-out-of-wordpress-updates

You can use http://www.usbwebserver.net/en/ which is free and portable. Nothing gets installed, and you can even run it from a flash drive - I love portable apps.

Nobody said that you need to have a localserver. You can install iwp on shared hosting account as well.

Another excellent solution for a localserver is http://ampps.com/
This comes with MANY scripts that can be installed automatically. You can have it to even install and configure a WP multisite if you wanted too.

I use both bwt...
