I just downloaded and installed the latest version yesterday. I went back and opened an older file to edit it for a Joomla 2.5 site upgrade. After exporting the template and installing it on a 2.5.1 install I see the the following line: "Joomla! is Free Software released under the GNU General Public License."
I opened the template back up and verified that when exporting the template that the check box for include a link to the CMS was unchecked and it was. I uninstalled the template from the site, re-exported it and then re-installed the template. I am still seeing the same line.
Inspecting the element in Chrome I see the following code showing up:
<div class="footer2"><a href="http://www.joomla.org">Joomla!</a> is Free Software released under the <a href="http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html">GNU General Public License.</a></div>
When I check the template's index.php file in the Template Manager this line of code does not show up at all.
Any ideas?

I think some Joomla advertisement module is placed on a footer position, you can check the footer module positions.

go to extensions- >module manager find the 'footer' module and press unpublish. Footer module shows the Joomla! copyright information.

Easy solution. Unpublish the "Copyright" module under Enxtension Manager. Make a new module. Go to "New" in Module Manager, select Custom HTML. Write your preferred copyright information, assign it the "Copyright" position and save. No coding or anything. Just a simple answer for a very common question.

Language override solves this and keeps site's copyright.
