When want to do my own background in the template.
Which dimensions (measurements) do I have to use?

The background image which is not repeated(x and y) can only cover the entire background upto a limited screen resolution, so it is not possible to determine the max size of image.
You should either consider repeating the background image or inserting a big image(download time will be big too).

Maybe Artisteer could support multiple background images, although one could manually change things now. Lots of Google articles on that (in CSS3).
Just mentioning it in case it might be a solution in this case.

I use 1680*1050 images optimized in photoshop for my background. I use this size because is the size of my screen

I see many people design for their screen size... You should check it on other computers too.
Specially when using big size elemnts, sized by pixels.
Alwais use fluid width by % rather than px when possible, then it will auto fit any resolution and screen
