Does artisteer support the css from the display suite modules? If so great! Otherwise any plans for this? Or is there a way to support it?

Unfortunately Artisteer cannot make itself compatible with the thousands of Drupal modules, and though I agree it would be an excellent feature, it would be rather cumbersome. What I suggest you do is post a feature request here - http://drupal.org/project/issues/ds?categories=All asking the mod developer to take advantage of Artisteer's IDs / Classes for better displays.

It may work just fine even if Artisteer didn't develop functionality around Display suite since it is afterall a module. A theme is a theme and a module normally applies it's own CSS unless overridden. Should work fine, test it. :-)

It is possible to use Display Suite set of modules. Their are some notes (http://drupal.org/node/572614) and you have to use the Artisteer Logica for some parts in nd.tpl.php (copy this file in your theme).
I have tried it (it works), but have chosen not to use it in my project, because is it is overdone.
So in my opinion it has nothing to do with Artisteer! So it is a good suggestion from Lawrence: test it!

I'd also like to suggest a less resource intensive, more user friendly alternative. Try Panels + Views + CCK. With those 3 modules, you don't have to worry about Display Suite as most similar features are already in those 3 modules. Additionally, Display Suite has about 20% more resource usage than those 3 modules combined. I've learned this when testing page load times on various modules.
