Dumb question?

Hi all

I've just bought Artisteer to create DNN skins as I find designing DNN skins quite difficult to understand, to say the least.

I've played about with some designs and I'm really impressed with what it can do (except I would like vertical menus but I think that is coming up). My dumb question is "What is an article"? I can change the format of an article in Artisteer but when I set up my DNN page, the text is held all within a Text/HTML module (I may be wrong here...). From what I can see the module styling is controlled by Artisteer's "Block" settings. OK, I can cope, but what then do all the Article settings refer to, in DNN terms?

Thanks in advance,
John

Artisteer uses the generic terms "article" and "block" because it works with various CMS platforms.

To translate to DNN terms - articles and blocks are merely two types of module containers.

Unfortunately, in the current version of Artisteer it's only possible to create two types of containers, named: article and block.

So that's why I see name - Block and name - Article in DNN? I can choose which style I apply to all modules. I guess I can apply different styles to different modules too?

Yes. Blocks are intended for the sidebar and articles are intended for main content. But they can be applied as needed.

Can they? I guess that's what is confusing me. How do I tell DNN to use the Artisteer 'block' type for sidebars and "article" for main content modules? When I go to Host->Portals->(my portal) and look in the appearances section I can select a Portal skin (which I set to <name> - Page) and Portal Container (set to either block or article).

Do I then need to set individual modules to use either block or article?

I'll get this, but it's just taking me some while to understand the concepts. Thanks for your patience.

Yes. The easiest way is to set Block or Article as the default container, then apply custom containers to each module.

(Also keep in mind that a typical DNN site my have more than two types of containers. This is a current limitation of Artisteer, which could be worked around by saving multiple versions of the Artisteer template.)

I will give that a good try. Thanks very much for all your help; I hope to master DNN/Artisteer soon...

Anytime John. Please post your site when online, would like to see it!

Here is mine, created in Artisteer 2.3 (not using 2.4 as it's very buggy for DNN!)

Your site is great, there are lots of very nice features you've incorporated. For example "Quick Links". I was planning maybe a vertical menu down the left hand side but that leaves you so much more screen real estate.

And the use of tabs. I'm more a a VB/C# forms programmer so I'm used to such things but I need to bring them into my web design too.

I guess these are DNN modules?

I'm keeping clear of Artisteer 2.4 until it's properly released. I'm way too old to attempt to use a beta test version!

My site is at www.aldworthvillage.org but it's currently little more than a sketch pad for me to try out ideas on so don't judge it too harshly! If I can make a good go of it I will try some more websites with DNN & Artisteer

I have applied artisteer skin to my site and I have lost all the DNN dropdowns and images, I cannot see any dropdowns in SiteSettings and all the default DNN images have a X mark.

Did anybody have the same problem?

John, your site is looking good.

The tabs I use on http://www.informationresults.com/ are from http://www.gumbosoft.com. They work very well on all browsers and I highly recommend Gumbosoft, their modules are solid.
