Ok so I built my theme, installed it, and I want to make my forums one of the tabs in the top menu, how would I go about that?

Look for a plugin called Page Links to. You add a page and put the link info in the block that's added after you install the plugin. http://txfx.net/wordpress-plugins/page-links-to/
