First of all many of you that are reading this may have been using Artisteer for some time and have made helpful contributions to all the rest of us users. I am not posting this for you. I am posting it for the new people but feel free to bump it from time to time or add your two cents in so that other may be helped. An now to the new people.

First off you have gotten one of the greatest tools for building killer themes of all time. This does not mean however that it will be the only tool that you will need or that it will make it so that you will not have to learn some HTML or CSS if you really want to make super uber killer themes. Just scratch that thought out of your head right now.

Secondly it does not mean that you will not need a few other tools to help you make your themes as well. So lets run down a few things you will need besides Aristeer.

***To those of you in the know, if I miss something our you know of a better tool to use help the new people as well as the rest of us out and toss your tool of choice for a job out there please.***

An image Manipulation Program:

You will need a good image manipulation (editor) program. Many will use Photoshop or Paint shop pro but there are others out there that are free for you to use. They can be as simple as Photoscape or as powerful and complicated as GIMP. There are tons of them out there and everyone has their own personal preference. I personally have several on my system as some seem to do things better or faster than others.

A CSS/HTML editor:

This can be as simple as notepad which came on your system for free to as complex as Dreamweaver there are tons of other free editors that range from simple to complex as well. You will just have to find one that fits your budget and your style. That is right I said style as I think anyone can learn any piece of software but not all software can fit a particular persons style.

An FTP program:

This is the tool we use to upload our themes onto our web server in order for them to be activated and then viewed on our site. You can go pay for something like WSFTP or you can get a free one like FileZilla. I like FileZilla personally and so its what I personally use.

Next is books:

I don’t care if they are in digital format or the real deal in paper there are a couple of books that I find so handy its not funny. They are as follows.

Web Design In A Nutshell, PHP In A Nutshell, and MYSQL In A Nutshell

Now if you just want to build simple clean effective themes you may not want to deal with PHP and MYSQL but they help since most of the software your themes will be on will be running on PHP and MYSQL.

Well I hope you folks new to Artisteer will find this helpful and I hope the rest will add their 2 cents in where they see fit.

I'm not new to artisteer, have build plenty of themes I use, and am conversant with HTML, CSS, FTP, DreamWeaver & Paintshop Pro.

But, I want to have more than my current ony very basic familiarity with PHP and MYSQL; Amazon reviews of the Nutshell books indicate those are best used as reference books for those who already know the language.

What books do you recommend for a PHP MYSQL beginner to get a step-by-step, understandable training in that?

I emphasize that I much prefer step by step, understandable books that teach as if you don't know anything (I have a "teach yourself javascript in 24 hours" book that is basically useless because the author somehow forgot to explain basic concepts and why we're learning something.)

Thanks!
David

David,

Again I turn to the big O as I call them. They got a great site here They call it Head First. You can find the books that I will be linking to in their books section.

Head First Web Design

Head First PHP & MySQL
http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596006303/

Head First JavaScript

They may seem pricey but the real world hands on knowledge you will gain is worth every penny you spend on them. You might find them used on Amazon or somewhere else cheaper.

Yet you can never ever go wrong with a O'Reilly book. There is not one on any subject that I have picked up that is not well done and that you wont gain anything from it.
