Menus

Well since I last posted I chose a host, installed Joomla, installed my template, and have begun adding content.

I've learned a lot and have way more to learn.

I don't really want to share the link because the site is such a mess.

The immediate issue I need help with is that while my template has drop down menus they are not actually working. I have the "top menu" working correctly. I've clicked the radio button to always show the drop down.

But I can't figure out where to indicate what goes on the sub menu. Everything is set up in Artisteer right, it is the Joomla assignment that I can't find.

Thanks!
Holly

Garry,
To be clear, the "sections" are showing up correctly on the top menu. Each of those pages has several "categories". I want the categories on the drop down menu.

When I go to menus> main menu> new

I have to select a menu type. I assume that should be articles? Then I chose section.

I still have no drop down and I don't see any terminology of child assignment. But, by selecting the section, I assume that made the child relationship?

Thanks,
Holly

Hi,

I hope I understand clearly so here it goes....

From my belief if you want anything to show up as a submenu you have to make it a menu. The section layout under article only creates a link to the all the categories and displays it in an article. So, you would have to manually create a new menu for each section, set the parent item, etc.

I also have a problem with the top drop down menu. In the Artisteer it shows correct and it seems it works. But when I install the template in joomla it doesn't work anymore. I add submenu items from the administration panel the right way but the new submenu items appear in the top menu in the end together with the rest normal menu items. I will be happy if somebody explains in a simple language how to make this drop down menu working in joomla

Can anyone point to a well written step by step tutorials on the TOP drop down menu? I guess since it includes links to the pages/articles the tutorial should include the right way to set up the articles for assignment to the menu as well. Who knows where I'm getting lost in the process.

This isn't my first time around the block w/ this type of stuff. I just think I've been reading "how tos" on various bits here and there but the big picture of how this all glues together is escaping me.

The artisteer "how to" stops short of finishing the lesson.

I'm thinking of going to look for a book.

Artisteer is a "template" system. Basically, it only creates the basic graphics display for your site. UTILIZING the template is a whole different animal.

The reason this information is not covered by Artisteer's forums is because it is assumed that you are familiar with how to utilize the Joomla! CMS system (or Drupal, WordPress, etc.).

Here's a good article on how to create a menu/sub-menu and or separate menus for your site: http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Creating_a_submenu#Example_Data

I hope this answers your question.

It appears that for the user3 position menu to display sub/child menus you MUST enable "Always show sub-menu Items" in the extentions->module manager.

Hope this helps!

Ok, :-)
If im understanding correctly you having an issue figuring out how to make your top menu drop down function work correctly....Like my site ..
wwww.electricmotorshop.net

To do this you have to do as follows....
So you have your main catagory on your top menu lets says its called "resources", now enter your next catagory and flag it a parent of "Resources"(or what ever your menu name is). For every menu you want below that you have to flag resources the parent. This will make your drop down menu actually drop down instead of throwing the menus to the right.

Also make sure you have your Top menu Module set correctly
go to

*Extension
*module Manager
*top menu
* "under module parameters" flagged to yes!
*Always show sub-menu Items (yes)

Below is what it should look like in the top menu area in your admin panel ( if you have done what I state above) except you have your own catagory names

29 Resources
30 . |_ Conversions
31 . |_ Glossary
32 . |_ Motor Connection Diagrams
33 . |_ Motor Connection/Tapping Info
37 . |_ Motor Formulas
35 . |_ NEC Chart Motor Full Load
36 . |_ NEMA Quick Reference Chart
37 . |_ Relube Procedure
