HELP WITH NON-BLOG SITE

Hey ya’ll! This is my first post so I will try not to ramble on too much. About a year ago I paid a “designer” firm to build a web site for my new Art business – which does not have a blog. They used Wordpress and set it up like any other blog site. They did a terrible job and delivered a very unattractive and for the most part unuseable site. I was left to figure out how to redesign it on my own, and with the help from the Wordpress forums and codex sites I was able to use a different theme and do a lot of tweaking to get it somewhat like I wanted it. I work a full time job with a long commute leaving precious little time to learn even the basics. The gallery they built was inoperable so I had to redo it using Zenphoto – again with a lot of help from their forum.

OK – now to my question: I am not totally happy with the current layout and would like to redo my entire gallery using NextGen . The problem I am having is the page is too narrow to display my home page images accurately – they are sort of squashed together and slightly distorted. The gallery selections are all non-uniformly scattered about and unprofessional looking.

I recently purchased Artisteer and am very pleased with it so far. I have designed a new template without the side bar and with the menu across the top with drop down lists in order to leave as much space as possible for the main body/content of the site. The problem I am having is working around all the blog elements that were put in place from the beginning. It is taking a lot of trial and error removing sidebar, comments, categories, widgets, etc. to see what will work. I have tried changing the width in the style sheet of my current theme, but the main content ends up being way down at the bottom of the page below the sidebar. In the small amount of time I have to devote to the redesign I can not complete the process in one sitting so I have to go back and undo any of my changes so that the site is not all out of whack when it is viewed – after my last session I finally got it all back in place except my pages are now out of order in my menu.

I know there has got to be a better way to do this, so I hope some of you can offer some suggestions. Should I just start over from scratch? If so, do I use the “company home page” option or the “Wordpress theme” when saving? Or is there a different option I should choose when I start my template design? (Sorry, I’m at work now and don’t remember the exact wording on the options). I have read the manual and searched the forums, but have not found a feasible solution for my limited knowledge of CSS and html.

I hope my questions make sense – here is my web site if that will help. www.smilingdogartandphotoshop.com

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Rhonda

You should start with Wordpress theme and you can choose a layout for your theme ( insert sidebar or remove) going: Layout--> Columns

OH, thanks Garry - I got that already :-) I'm pretty sure that's what I did. I have created a WP theme, one column, menu across top, but when I change themes in my current site, it messes up the page lists, the gallery links, etc.

I guess I put too much information in my post - I'll keep trying.

Thanks for your response just the same.
