I have a client that wants to have a layout without a header but with a content area above that blog area. This is a Wordpress blog. The layout would be three columns with the wide blog column in the middle and narrow columns on each side. A content block would be at the top in between the two narrow columns and above the blog area. This would be for a calendar of events. I'm sure it can be done but I don't now CSS. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Firstly select a layout without header going layout-> page layout. You can place any content in header section by placing the template tags in header.php which display the content you need displayed.

Thanks for the response! Will the content in the header.php extend completely from side to side? The client wants the sidebars to go to the top of the page and the content area to be in between. Also, I need this to be an area that the client can make changes to. Don't want them to have to edit header.php. "You're heading in the wrong direction" is an acceptable answer. I just need to know what is reasonable.

You can place that template tag in a div and specify the width of that div

The header idea will definitely work. Another easy fix is creating a div and then setting the specs in the css file. Check out this site I did for Certified Golf (http://certifiedgolfnc.com). It does have a header, unlike the site you are making, but I created the div above the <?php if (have_posts()) : ?> on the main index template and put the additional content in before the posts. The div can easily be set to full width as well in the css file.
