First option is to use blog title or tag line for text, otherwise you need to create a new div in header.php and write your text in it(note this text will not be dynamic).
You can simply use text widget from your Wordpress admin if you want to add text to your sidebars

I do understand that we can use the sidebar to add text, widgets, etc, etc. However I was hoping to use the text block in the header for updating tweets and newsletter signup. And I am aware there are many sidebar plugins for this, but I was wondering how to get this code in the artisteer header text block.
When you export the theme, is there a CSS Class and ID associated with this?

There is some PHP code at top of your sidebar.php by which Wordpress place widgets on your sidebar, you can try copying it to your header.

Can you expand on that? How exactly would you do that? It looks more complicated than that.

It is quite a big topic, you need to learn how a sidebar get widgets on it dynamically, it is called dynamic sidebar and following links explain how to make a sidebar dynamic;
