I have created a new WP template and uploaded it to my server. When I activate the new template, I find that selecting the Home page takes me to my blog posts rather than my established home page.
If I go back to my original WP theme, then the Home page goes to the correct place!
Any ideas?

For a site there can be only one home page, by default your posts page is your home page in Wordpress but you can make any of your static page as your home page going settings-> reading on your Wordpress admin

So you are saying that once a WP theme is changed, the settings - reading go back to default and I need to reset them, correct?

I think you are mixing two terms theme and template which are quite different things in Wordpress (template is a single file like footer.php and theme is combination of all the templates).
If your new Artisteer theme's home link is not taking you to correct place you can alter it from "function art_menu_items()" in your functions.php
