You can use text widget from your Wordpress admin panel (appearance->widgets->text widget) to display your affiliate links.
There are lot of good banner management plugins available for Wordpress: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/banner

I have tried to use the text widget, but it will not open a window for me to put in my text or html

The best way to do it is using text widget. As you said your text widget is not working can I know which version of Artisteer are you using.
