You need to learn some some CSS so that you can alter the footer of your theme according to your needs.

To edit the CSS for the footer login to your wordpress site and depending on what version of wordpress your using go to >themes (or design tab) then theme editor > then click styelsheet.css.
Look through the code that is displayed in the editor and start editing sections named footer etc. There will be some properties such as heights and width. Then click updated file, and view the site in a different browser/browser tab to see what changed.
You can also click on the footer.php that is listed on the editable files here to see information about the HTML code for the footer.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you need more clarification.

One additional note: When ever you go in to do editing within your themes CSS code be sure to copy and paste the ORIGINAL CSS code into notepad or another word, etc document.
This is important because if the editing is not what you want you may want to go back to the original CSS and it will be preserved this way.
Hope this is useful...learned by experience.
