 Actually you can, Under menu submenu you need to set that to levels-multilevels, then under submenu you have the option of size on your submenus, You can set width, height and border width.

What version are you using? I make these changes all the time and it works in the latest 2.1 RC

I was using 2.0 and just now downloaded 2.1.
Things are working now but minimum width is 150 px which seems to me a little bit too wide!

You may post the url after uploading the site, I'll point you to the styling rule in style sheet to decrease it width
