In my site http://www.electronicsgadgets.org , the theme is locking up in internet explorer. Some of you might say, well you need not worry about it because it works perfect in firefox. That's not true, you need the theme to work in these two main browsers. Because, if you don't you'll end up losing money. A lot of internet users never upgrade there browser and still used the old IE. Now I'm not sure if the theme locks up in the new IE, but it's surely bad in the the old. The theme takes so long to load, there's an obvious bug and it needs to be fixed. I'm using the latest Artisteer.

Love the theme maker, but just a little dissapointed, because you can't I'm not going to use the maker until this gets fixed!

I'm not the only one!! I used the search button and found another members site that locks up when visiting, takes very long to load http://www.wandelen-met-martin.nl/

I did have others view it in the latest IE, seems to be fine I think, they said it was. I'm using IE6, seems all of the themes that pop out of Artisteer aren't to compatible with that browser.

I think this is a biggie, because I know a lot of people that never upgrade their browser, my family members especially. Some might not think of it as a big deal, I do! Lot of money could be lost

Did some more researching, not the only one on here that has slow loading site. I don't even have anything on my site, no images or nothing and it's slow as hell in IE6.

Here's the one thread -> http://www.artisteer.com/?post_id=102542&p=forum_post

All I can say is buyer beware, this needs to be fixed pronto!

Proof for admin, view in IE6, both are plain templates!
http://www.electronicsgadgets.org
http://www.wandelen-met-martin.nl

I switch to stock templates and they load super fast in IE6, so has nothing to do with the plugins if you bring that up!

FWIW, I'm having the same problem.

I'm also having cosmetic problems with Artisteer themes when viewed in IE6, which I will document in a separate thread.

I hate to put this all on the admin, because I'm sure it's hard creating a generator like this and it's a great program. I just hope he can fix it, because if not, it was just a waste of money and time for me. I'm not going to bother using the creator.

One of the sites I manage has over a million hits this year.

Their stats are:

Msie: 7.0 46.7 %
Msie: 6.0 15.6%

Msie total - 64.4%

Firefox tot - 26.9%

That being said, I looked at your design and it's not "plain", it has shadows, radiused boxes, etc... all things that IE 6 doesn't like.

If you are going to design a site that targets a specific browser (not a good idea) then you have to know what that specific browser can handle. You can't blame Artisteer for a lack of technology and design knowledge, it gives you the best possible code based on the design you choose.

If IE6 is your target, then shadows and glares and other CSS stuff that is not handled well by IE 6 shouldn't be in your design.

Here is a link to browser webstats.

Ummmm!

This site is pretty dam plain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No shadows and no glares!!! And it's not even mine, some other user here posted it

---> http://www.wandelen-met-martin.nl

And it locks up for a good 15-20 seconds, not good for SEO and not good for people browsing. A lot of people browse using IE6.

I would suggest doing something, because something is in the code that is locking it up, something not compatible with IE6.

If anyone has an answer on why things would be locking up like this, post. No way in hell it's just shadows and glares.

Basically found out what the problem is, the code in css file style.ie6.css doesn't agree with IE6 at all. It was written to help out IE6, but it's loading to slow.

I can understand where you're coming from Admin, basically you're saying IE6 is shit, which it is. But, you have to understand that most people still use the browser.

Be interesting to see if anyone fixes the problem.

I don't really think that, I think it is a great program! I just wanted to get a fast response. I actually think it's the best money I've spent on the internet this whole year, other than phpbay.

But, I'm worried that I will be losing money if users can only view the site in certain browsers, get my drift? I still think a lot of users use the old IE because there to stupid to update their browsers. I swear people are so lazy!

I'm going to download the latest IE on another computer and see how it looks!

Thanks for your input though, did help me a little bit and stay on the positive side of things.

So what do you think, do you think a lot of people are still using IE6 and other older versions?

Why dont we all bann IE 6 websites, with if statements like;

<!--[if IE]>
<link href="upgradetoie8.html" />
<![endif]-->

<b>Don't focus on the past!</b>, Give people a option to download a newer version!

I certainly get your point, but you can't expect a company to focus on fix for a browser that probabbly isnt going to be used whitin three years.

Maybe we should all invest a little with online banners for upgrading the browsers!

Jeroen,

That is a good suggestion.

Erik G - Honestly, I don't worry at all about users on IE 6. Neither do my clients.Rule of thumb is that you can't build sites for everyone, you have to satisfy the majority of the users who come to your site.

Last month, 300,000+ hits on one site and 70% of them were IE7 or better. I would rather build for that stat and get the sales from that group than build down for IE6 (only 12%).

Like I said, IE6 doesn't play in the real Web 2.0 world.

There is a current article on this subject at Sitepoint, Support for IE6: It’s all About Accessibility.

http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/04/07/support-for-ie6-its-all-about-accessibility/It suggests some work arounds

It suggests some good work arounds, or you could just use the, in your face, plugin for WordPress, [Shockingly Big IE6 Warning

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/shockingly-big-ie6-warning/screenshots/

I'm somewhat in agreement with Marc, in that you can't please everyone, especially in the fast moving, ever changing technology area. The bottom line is identify your reader, what are they using? For example it's highly unlikely that a CMS or Blog designed for the interest of gamers would have many using an older browser. While a site made for members of AARP may have a significant old browser user base.

I have been looking for workarounds to this and I came across this article

http://www.whirlycott.com/phil/2006/07/25/msie-hangs-when-trying-to-load-jpg-images/

It suggests that
Quote :
certain applications on the Mac platform (like Photoshop) put large quantities of XML into the header of .jpg images.
which causes big problems for IE6.

I wonder if this could be the problem here?

I haven't checked any further than simply turning off image display.
Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Multimedia and clear "Show pictures"

This seems to fix the problem for me.

Though I hand code and am on a Mac, I don't know what's happening here, but one thing I've stopped doing lately is supporting IE 6 fully. My designs function, run fast, but if PNGs look odd and margins are off and javascript errors are there, then so be it. I make it work great in IE 7 and all the other browsers. IE 6 is 10 years old folks. Even microSuck main site doesn't work very well with IE 6.

Just FYI,
I've tested the IE6 templates discussed above:
http://www.electronicsgadgets.org/about
And it loaded instantly.

The page at http://www.wandelen-met-martin.nl/
is a totally different case since it is not a template but a page full of content, pictures, slow loading ads, etc. There can be many reasons for many things to not load quickly, but there is no reason to look at a page and assume that page means template.
If anyone is doing template performance testing, do not include content, pictures, ads, widgets, custom javascript and other elements not related to the templates. Such "testing" and discussions have nothing to do with templates or IE6.

Every time when someone contacts Artisteer support we do analyze each specific case, usually finding something not related to the template that was causing performance or browser compatibility issues.
Please do not mix such cases on the forums and do not point to something else claiming "this is my problem". Usually two similar problems have nothing to do with each other. You can obtain help or have your specific issue analyzed by contacting the Artisteer support team directly via the "Contact Us" page.
Any valid issues also have much higher chance of being resolved by being submitted to product support.

Thank you,

Paul Hudson

Definitely more to it than "content, pictures, slow loading ads".

Compare this page which has almost no content on it, just a few thumbnails and stuff down the side and takes anywhere between 30secs to a few mins to display:

---> http://aussieexotics.com/artisteer

Vs this page which has probably 50 medium size photos which loads the content for display instantly and *then* loads the photos:

http://aussieexotics.com/forum/lotus/lotus-2009-beechworth-t3771.30.html

A user will stick around to watch photos load if there's already content, but when a page appears to lock-up their computer they'll close it down quickly.

There must just be a simple portion of something Artisteer tries to do which confuses IE6 - and whilst I'd love to just tell those users to sod off and come back with a better browser - they account for about 20,000 of my monthly visitors.

I'd be happy with a cut-down version of the css being delivered to strip out the bit which offends IE6, it's just I don't know where to start looking and don't want to spend a dozen hours disabling each element one-by-one to figger out the culprit - Artisteer is here to *save* me time!

Otherwise - love it.

Ash,

Remove every ad, header or link that is external to your website. There are several of them on that page. Once you do that, then we can accurately get a measurement as to what the load time of the page is.

Load time measurements *have* to be done on a page that has no external "influences" such as PPC ads, click thrus, external banners, etc.

A slow down at just ONE of those external links can cause the whole page to render slowly or not at all, depending on how the code is implemented.

I agree with the thread starter this is a big issue. Although I think everyone should be using IE7+ or firefox in this web 2.0 world but, not everyone has changed. 15-20% of lost traffic is too much IMO. How can you ignore that as a web developer or advertiser?!

I can see the argument, but is a fix too much to ask for? Would a fix even be possible?

Wished we could get some feedback from Artiseer.

I give up on this, I really do.

This isn't Artisteer's issue.

It's IE6.

If you build a design that has elements incompatible with IE6, what should Artisteer do? Rework the design for you automatically? Then people would say "well, now it doesn;t look right in IE7 and FF"

It is literally a no win situation.

If you want compatibility with IE6, build it from scratch.

It's like putting jet engine fuel in a Model T. It will still work but that Model T isn't going to go any *faster*.

For additional support or comments, contact support@artisteer.com... I can't say anything else on this subject because the logic being used escapes me. It goes against every core development philosophy in modern web design and programming for almost every Fortune 500 company that exists today.

If you look for browser issues in the Wordpress forum, you will find there are IE6 issues there as well,and not just because of Artisteer, but because of the nature of Web 2.0 standards and the fact that IE6 is technology that is 10 years old!

Could the suggestion above not work (Ash Simmonds)? Getting rid of the features that lock up IE 6, but only for IE 6, and the other will be left the same. Couldn't this be done with the IE spreadsheet of a If ie6 command? At least the page would work even if you lose some of the shadows or features I'd think it would be a good solution if possible.

Jeremy,

This discussion about IE6 needs to happen with SUPPORT.

support@artisteer.com

Artisteer does not maintain a big presence here in this forum, so your issue is best addressed by talking to them directly.

Actually we are not aware of any specific issues with IE6.
All IE6 related problems reported to our support team were resolved by the customers. They were not related to Artisteer. Usually content was messed up, while couple people had an old and corrupted IE6 installation that they needed to update or reinstall. No known IE6 issues with Artisteer so far.

Please note that most problems are individual and there is no need to assume that if you have a problem then it is related to IE6 or that everyone else has the same problem. Allow someone to take a look at your individual issue and help you rather than venting, guessing and assuming.
