Ok, I have figured out the most bug free and reliable way to upload a template created in Artisteer 2.
Step 1. Create Your Template in Artisteer 2

Step 2. Save Your Artisteer Template as a single name AND with NO Spaces in the name (NONE!!!!)

Step 3. Now Go To The Export Option Under Artisteer Logo Icon At the Top Left In Artisteer.

Step 4. Select Export Joomla Template, Name Your File (Again No Spaces In The Name!!!!).

Step 5. Now Select "Export As A Folder" Option. DO NOT Export AS A ZIP Archive!!!. Click OK. Remember Where You Saved This You will need it later.

Step 6. Open Your Favorite FTP PROGRAM (I like FileZilla). Establish A Connection With Your Remote Site (You will have to know your hosting accounts ftp login information. Found usually in your hosting Control Panel. Once you are connected, you will see the files and folders. Depending on your hosting company, your Joomla Template Folder Will be located in different places. Mine is located in public_html folder. You will see a folder named "templates". Do Not Click On The Template Folder, Just be able to see the "template" folder. This is where you are going to transfer the Exported Folder You Created In Artisteer in Steps 4 and 5.

Step 7. Do Not Select A Single Transfer Type (ie..ASCII or Binary) INstead select Auto. The reason being is that image files upload via. Binary. html etc files upload using ASCII. IF you choose one transfer type, you risk the chance of files uploading improperly. FileZilla's Auto setting for Transfer Type takes care of this for you. You can upload them separately using the appropriate transfer method as well, if you choose.

Step 8. In FileZilla (and most FTP Programs) You will have a Local Site Window (usually on the left side) and a Remote Site Window.

Step 9. Look on the Local Site Window and Find The Template Folder That You Exported From Artisteer (Not The Artisteer File document). It is important that you select the Folder That You Exported From Artisteer. It has all the necessary folders needed to upload properly to your Joomla Site.

Step 10. Now CLICK on the Folder From Step 9 and drag it over to the "template" folder on the Remote Site side.

Step 11. Wait now for the FTP program to upload the folder. When it is complete, open the "template" folder on the Remote Site side and verify that your template is in there. If it is then close your FTP program.

Step 12. open Your administration side of your Joomla site. usually www.yoursite.com/administrator

Step 13. Click on The Extensions Tab and Select Template Manager. You should now see the folder that you uploaded as a template name. Select the template as the default template and click preview. You should now be looking at the template you created in Artisteer.

Step 14. Now add articles etc... You Are DONE!!!!

Hope This Helps everyone out there with this same problem.

One final note. Do not try archiving the exported folder you created in artisteer as a zip file, and then try to install it as a package file in Joomla Admin. IT WILL NOT WORK!!!!! EVEN IF YOU GET THE ARCHIVE FILE TO UPLOAD, DO NOT USE IT, THERE ARE TOO MANY BUGS.

Regards, Carl

Carl, thanks for the work around, but why don't you just zip the exported directory using a tool like 7Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/). I just right click on the directory and select "Send To >> +Add to .Zip". It works every time for me without any bugs. Then I just use the standard administrator back end to upload the template.

Thanks for the update Audra, maybe they fixed that bug and just forgot to mention it. I usually use FTP so I had not checked that yet.

I think Carl did a nice job on this tutorial. There are a lot of "new users" who are unfamiliar with procedures like this and often ask questions related to this type of topic. I believe it was his intent to assist other users in this regard, thanks for taking the time to put this post together Carl.

Io psero che risovino al piu presto questo difetto perche e uan seccatura fare tutta la procedura via FTP, se lo avessi saputo prima non avrei pagato, ma avrei aspettato che uscisse una versione compatibile per Joomla 1.5x

Version 2.02 will not install in Joomla 1.5 as a zip file

Version 2.1 will install

Artisteer reports version 2.1 is at http://www.artisteer.com/?p=download_v21rc

You know I have gotten used to zipping the template up myself thus I did not notice the update. I find now I like to tweak the template before zipping it into a final package. Anyone else find the same thing?

None of this works. I think Artisteer is just jerking us around.

I'm having problems uploading the template. I did it both ways the zip file tells me that
Upload template - Upload Failed
ERROR: Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.
[ Continue ... ]
so then I did it manually --- uploading the files but they don't show up in the Admin Backend. Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks,
YoonMi

Joomla returns these type of errors if you either try to install a Joomla 1.5 template on Joomla 1.0 installation or try installing a HTML page on Joomla installation.

I'm getting 'can't find xml file' errors when I try installing templates made with Artisteer 2.4.0.25435 Standard Edition. I'm installing on a fresh 1.5.18 version.

I've uploaded the files to the template directory, avoiding the zip process alt together, and when i try to load the template manager, I get this:
XML Parsing Error at 1:1. Error 4: Not well-formed (invalid token)

Obviously, there's something wrong with the xml file, but I've opened it and it looks ok.

This seems to be something that has cropped up between Joomla 1.5.15 and 1.5.18. I had this same template installed on a 1.5.15 install and it went fine, but the upgrade seems to be the only change.

Hello,
I have exported a template as a zip file and then uploaded it to my jooola on the web. It said template successful. I then went to template manager and selected it as my default. Then when I went to my home page, it just had a blank white page.
Can anyone help me?
I don't know beans about this. I always used FrontPage and all this joomla just about blows my mind.
I woudl sure appreciate it if someone woudl go to www.customart.biz/ and see if they can see anything besides a blank white page.

@ Eric

Make sure you are uploading a Joomla template, you should also try exporting the template as .zip folder, following instructions may also be helpful:

@ Donna

You should try disabling the SEF URLs

I have spent very little time in forums so if I am in the wrong place or doing this wrong, please let me kmow.
To the one that told me to make sure I am using a joomla template. I assumed when I opened Artisteer and clicked on joomla template that I was then creating a joomla template, correct? That is what I did. After I created it, I exported it as a zip and not a folder. Is that the correct way to do it?
What is so strange is I can see the thumbnail in the template manager. I just can't get it to show up on the site as a default or assigned, either one.
Any more suggestions?
When I use the JA Purity template, it shows up. I am at my ropes end as to why the trial worked and this one does not. EVen more puzzling is the fact that when I hold my mouse over the template name, it shows the template.

Thanks for your input.
