I have a friend that is a designer. Can I take his photoshopped stills and by shopping them into pieces make any sort of custom design for drupal sites or am I limited to the gradients, clipart etc in artisteer?

Anything is possibly outside of Artisteer, such as taking a PSD file, slicing it and making the Drupal theme from scratch.

If you are using Artisteer, you'll be limited to changing images in the header and background images. You can't use graphics to replace the sidebar, frames, etc.

This is the HUGEST design flaw I see in this program, personally. Once you have exhausted the limited selection of glares/textures/etc in artisteer, you're a bit stuck.

Oh, I can make an icon or a menu header background texture and import it through the file inserter, but it absolutely drives me batty that I can't re-tint it from within artisteer as I could a built in image.

To hell with adding collapsible modules, give us the same image effects on imports!!!!!

Jennifer - incorrect assumption, re: exhausting glares/textures.

You can upload and implement all of those you want to your personal preferences.

You can insert a background image "From File" in the Backround Menu.

You can do the same thing in the Header Menu.

So, while there are limitations here and there, the program is highly beneficial to allow the foundation of a template to be created and then exercise creative skills to massage it.

I know you can use the File option and add whatever you like. I have added plenty of things that way. However, what you cannot do is reuse the file having the artisteer program recolor it as it does its native images.

For example, if I want a cute little VW bug icon as a bullet on a site, I would have to make the icon in some other program and color it to match the site and then use it from the File option. But when I make another site that wants a VW bug icon for a bullet, I can't just grab that one and tell it to fill with a theme color like I could a built in icon, I have to go back to Fireworks/Photoshop and build a new colored version. That's what I was talking about.

There is no way to import your own graphic elements to be used as the included elements. Artisteer should allow you to import .png files.

Or you could build it from scratch and spend hours and hours and hours doing it.

Or get 95% of the design done, then go replace the "icons" or whatever element you want to replace in a matter of a few minutes.

It's not perfect, but it beats doing it by hand a million times over.

Make the background of your image transparent. That is the difference between your images and the ones in Artisteer.
