Rog,
This question might be better answered by the plug in author, since use of his plug in requires you to modify your theme (and the way Wordpress works fundamentally).
There are other navigation plugins out there that work very well with Artisteer tthemes as well.

I use Artisteer version 2 and have difficulty exporting the vertical menu. any suggestions?

You should try following instructions
For vertical menu: You should place main menu module on left or right position(depending on where you designed it in Artisteer) and set its module class suffix to art-vmenu to start using vertical menus, you can visit following link for more details: http://www.artisteer.com/?p=help_joomla#joomla5
You can set module class suffix under: Extensions-> module manager-> Click "main menu"-> on your right click "Advanced Parameters"-> fill art-vmenu in "Module Class Suffix" input box.
For horizontal menu: You should place your main menu module on user3 position, you can read following documentation for more details: http://www.artisteer.com/?p=help_joomla#joomla2
