Exporting ARTX file with theme

In what cases is this necessary? i am designing a new site and created the content inside the theme and want to export the theme design with the content. Do I need to export the ARTX file also? Also, if you don't mind giving the customer the source file of the theme you created, it can be very useful when the customer comes after a year that he wants to change someting and you might not have the source file with you, but it's still uploaded on the customer site.
