how to add other categories to my blog design on the right column?

The column for the main text is on the left. On the right, all i have is a search bar. I want to do more with the column than just cycle through other designs for the search bar. I want to add stuff, other categories. like: "about me" and "blog archive" and etc. How do I do that? Thanks!
