When using a theme which has a page with 3 columns lets say. Can these be added as widgets so that its easy to edit the content? If not, is the only way to edit the content by editing the actual HTML?

That is where you would put this content. Unless of course, one of your columns is a menu. When you go into Appearance, Widgets. You will see a Primary Widget Area, Secondary Widget area and you can put your code etc in there.
