To use the art- prefix or not

I didn't know where to post this exactly but since I use WordPress the most I thought I'd post it here.

I know there are many people that remove the " art- " prefix from their themes.

Can anyone tell me if there are actually any advantages to keep it there or situations with plugins, etc., where the prefix is needed (i.e., WPTuxedo, Templateer, Microthemer, etc)?

I'd like to take this further: What purpose does the "art" prefix in the CSS section of Export - Options exactly do? I'm not an experienced CSS programmer (at least not yet, anyway), so does it add something to the "created by Artisteer" line in the coding? Does removing the "art" prefix in that section do anything in particular?

I could be wrong but I think the reason why the prefix is added is to keep your css from possibly conflicting with css from other plugins or style sheets.

The prefix is kind of an extra layer of protection.

You can also change that prefix or not have it all together.

Makes sense, Monty. Thanks for elaborating.

I think to take it a step further, and probably open a new can of worms, is how to get rid of all the "created by Artisteer" lines of coding and substitute those with "created by my company" as easily and as quickly as possible.

With "art-" or without it it is the same. Just done use something generic instead of it.
I use something from domain name, website name, to give customer some special feeling.

So if I understand you correctly, let's say I create a site for a dentist. I call the site Denver Dentist.com. So, instead of "art-" could I use "dentist-"? And would the hyphen be necessary?
