Where did the Email, Pdf, & Print buttons go?

Everything is enabled in Joomla (they are rendered OK with the default protostar template). However, when I use my own A4 template, they are gone. There is another post in this forum, but when I work on the template the "Articles" menu is simply not available, so I can't enable any buttons. Help please?
