Submenu items on mobile devices - a solution

The whole mobile/responsive thing in V 4 is pretty cool. Although it does seem to pose some problems with larger sites.

To avoid the whole screen being menus the submenus are a great solution. However my experience using a Android phone are very annoying.

1. Setting to always open only seems to work in vertical mode but any more than a few fills up the page too much.

2. Horizontal still needs to be clicked. The main problem is it's very tricky to click the menu item to expose the submenu without simply reloading the page. Arggg.

3. Setting them to reload isn't any better.

I found the perfect solution if the Artisteer team would implement it. Or even a workaround would be great. To make the top menu item that has the submenu items but not be linked to a page instead simply a item to click that shows the submenu. This saves space and prevents the oops I reloaded the page before I could click on a submenu item.

I am making a website for a sculpture organization and need 36 pages. Imagine how that would look. The whole screen would be a huge scoll to get to see anything, every time.

Another thing is you have no way of indicating there is a submenu. No little arrow or something next to it.

This site is a great example of this. http://www.gosphero.com/ Notice on the top right the dropdown indicator arrows and clicking on them only opens the submenu.

The way I see it is this is really the only real possible solution for a mobile device. Tablets aren't any better. They all need to be click on to expose the submenu and that seems to always reload the freakin' page. My Android tablet looks like a regular site so the always open never works.

Thoughts or work around?

This is standard functionality in Wordpress whereby you can select to make the top menu item of a submenu non-linked.

You can also achieve this manually by setting the href of any menu item to be # i.e. a link to a non specified anchor id on the page...

Does not seem to work with the phone in the vertical position. It work well turned horizontally.

I have the menu levels set to megamenu and responsive one level.

It appears to be more than a html fix. :(

I am still trying to figure out how to get a menu to work optimally on a phone. As of now it's just a nightmare. Larger sites just don't work.

They need to implement 2 things and it would be golden.

1. Like every other responsive template I see, the menu becomes a single item "Menu" and clicking on it expands to show the items. So a site with 10 menu items is not just menu list until you scroll way down to see content, every page is scroll, scroll, scroll. How annoying is that for a user. You expand the menu click a page and see content. Probably why everyone else is doing it that way.

2. Submenu items could be on a vertical menu and that menu should be allowed to be placed on a page by page basis. Not every page or none like it is now. This too should be the same thing, a item called "Menu" that is clicked on to show the items. Joomla/Wordpress have this as well as many other systems.

I am surprised more people aren't complaining about the poor implementation of menus for smartphones. The limited screen sizes need to be used for content not menu items.

In artisteer can you only add the multilevel submenu to your home dropdown or can you add the multilevel to your other pages in your menu.
Why I am asking, is because I tried to add a multi level submenu to some of my other pages in the menu area and it won't do that.

Also how many articles can those multilevel submenus hold -if your counting them in levels deep that doesn't make much sense to me as i don't know how many 500 page articles each level would hold.

I am in artisteer 4

Hoping to get some help on this matter.

Anyone at atristeer has a solution to this annoying problem ??

I have the same issue where the menu will reveal sub-menu items rather than opening the corresponding page.

Thanks

I just found out that Tanya (from the artisteer team) has clearly responded to this question in

http://www.artisteer.com/?post_id=242432&p=forum_post

Here is what she says:

Quote :
Hi, Seems that you have chosen the Expand on Click option under the Menu -> Levels -> Options -> Responsive levels. Use the Expand with Reload. Best regards, Tanya

Is there a solution for the multi level problem? Because this post:

http://www.artisteer.com/?post_id=242432&p=forum_post

Does only resolve the problem for 1 extra level in the menu. My menu looks like this

Home
- > information
-->extra information

The 3rd level of the menu is not shown on mobile devices. Anyone knows how to solve this issue? I don't want to use the SHOW all function because this fills up the entire screen.

Thanks for the help!

Marcel

Try using "all open' in responsive mode.

I have this same problem on a mobile the sub menu's are not expanding in wordpress.
The solution here given:
Menu -> Levels -> Options -> Responsive levels. Use the Expand with Reload.
I cant try the "Options" as it is ghosted so i dont have any options.
Using latest version of artisteer.
Any solution?

option 1. Find someone with the same artisteer verion and have them re export to wordpress.

option 2. Edit the js files to make things work.

I have artisteer 4.3.0.60818
