Exactly how is the 4.0 responsive and how can I get it to work well on desktop along with working well for a smart phone?

It's not. They used the tern "responsive designs", but clearly they meant something different that you and I think what "responsive designs" are.

They did not lie about it though, they just used the term to describe something else in general, like animations according to them.

I really hope I'm wrong though...

Well, it would help me alot to know how to make an artisteer website be responsive enough to be viewed on a smart phone...even if it meant changing some of the coding.

Many templates/themes nowadays are being made responsive... i was hoping Artisteer would do the same. Maybe they have but at this point I need some instructions along with the beta version to make it work.

Looks like 'responsive design' is currently not supported in Artisteer 4.

Isn't there a wordpress responsive plugin that will make your site 'responsive' (ie detect what device is viewing your site)

This is the second guy in the forums saying this, and if other repeat it enough, it will become a known fact, just like a presidential race.

A responsive design, DOES NOT DETECT the device of the visitor, it merely detects the screen resolution and "responds" accordingly. This is the ultimate answer to building a web site for any device at any resolution, for current or future devices.

BTW, WordPress 3.5 scheduled for Dec. 5 2012, will have the new twentytwelve template which is fully responsive. You can search for it and download to see for yourselves, there are some minor things that still needs to be ironed out though.

4.0 is a step in the right direction but there is no way I'm renewing again in Feb 2013 unless there is support for responsive designs by then, and I mean RESPONSIVE DESIGNS, not the crappy, deceptive definition crafted by their attorneys clearly for some cheap marketing ploy... I think that is a fair assessment of the situation !

I am with your regrading the responsive designs. I'm truly hoping they will reward us with that sooner rather than later, as I'm also finding free responsive templates as oppose to being offered only by the premium (paid) templates. It has become very popular, very fast, and Artisteer unfortunately has fallen behind in that regards.

The shift from just a template generator, to also a html editor is not new. This was presented to us with 3.0. However with 4.0 they have solidified it. It was very weak and elementary at best (content editing). I wonder if we now can iframe pages and other things that we were not allowed to do within Artisteer. I need to test those.

They changed the sequence of how things work, and if you ask me to the better. With 3.1 and earlier, you first had to choose the template type, and only if you chose a web site or blog type you could edit the html code (content editing). Now, that is available to everyone since content editing is allowed no matter for what type of a web site your template is for. And in the end, you can import the content within your cms...

Starting with 4.0 everybody gets the same template building and content building experience, and depending to what type of template you are exporting to, Artisteer exports the files accordingly. It will get the same data, and generate different files depending what you choose during the exporting process (html, WordPress, Joomla, etc...).

I think this is a big change, and a big step forward, but obviously some people disagree, which is fine.

Some months ago, some were complaining that they could not edit the content within Artisteer while making WordPress templates. Well now, you can. You can't argue for both sides...

However, let's not lose our focus, these are things we can't control, we need to find all the bugs, and we need to start experimenting with the SDK...

Hi
Just downloaded the Overview of Artisteer 4.0 features, it seems to have been changed from the version I downloaded last night. No longer makes reference to "responsive designs".

You are correct, they did change the wording. Good, that clears that up.

"...clears that up." ?? I don't agree. Although I find this 4.0 beta to be a great step forward, the ability for it to produce responsive designs should be expected in 2012. Responsive designs will soon be mainstream.

It seems to me that people who are so dependent on a tool like Artisteer to create the web design and programming for their clients wouldn't just lash out about the responsive web design. Considering they are doing 80-90 percent of your job, you should be happy. Artisteer is great but if you truly want to offer responsive web design then go learn one of the grid systems and do it yourself. Otherwise, be happy that you get such a great tool for less than $100.

Just my personal opinion.

I was, at first, VERY excited when I saw Artisteer V4.0....which I thought would have responsive capabilities built into it, now I guess I will stick with 3.x until that feature comes to pass. :(

Back too Woo Themes...which are responsive, but not nearly as purty or easy to configure as an Artisteer theme, but with 40% or more of my traffic coming from mobile devices....I can't stick in the past...got to move with the times.

Far be it for me to state the obvious....if Artisteer wants to continue to be on the cutting edge (and they have so far) it will be helpful them (let alone us) to have some sort of responsive design ability in their product.
I don't have to have the software produce responsive designs...I have other alternatives also. However, I would like to stick with Artisteer.

In Version 4 Beta 2 your templates are responsive... I have tested it myself on the desktop, iPhone, iPad, Droid, Droid Pad and even on the windows phone and upcoming Windows 8 pad. Try looking up the term Twitter Bootstrap which is a very powerful grid system. Artisteer is in 4 beta 2 appears to be moving in the direction and what I have seen and tested are doing a very good job. Just an FYI every CMS Joomla, Wordpress and Drupal will be using bootstrap by the end of this year. With that said the new version will be VERY responsive...Please know WTF you are talking about before you talk. Another thing, I am really tired of hearing the term I am professional...if you were you would sure as hell not be this program for all your needs!

I agree 100% with ross. However, he is responding to posts that were posted before we "previewed" the beta 2 version. The statements and sentiments were true then, but now the next coming version it's a big game changer.

Someone who does not the timeline well, and starts reading the posts on this page, might not realize this.

Artisteer in my opinion, is moving in the right direction, in all aspects. It's impossible to satisfy all, but they are by far the leaders in what they do, and I do expect to gain major market share not only from other template generating software, but also from html editing software as well, like Dreamweaver, Frontpage, etc... Why do you think content editing was added since 3.0?

maybe you could write a plug-in to make them responsive :-)

I actually have started converting the artisteer files into responsive layouts. The beauty of artisteer is that it always created the same code as in what the containers are called.

Heres' a great tutorial about how you can convert themes in general:
http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/theme-development/converting-wordpress-to-be-mobile-friendly/

Here you can see one I have converted but it's still in work.
http://testsite2.jewel-webdesign.com/

I was working on a cheat sheet of the steps to convert it to make it faster. Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer otherwise I would convert it into a plug-in :-/

My biggest complaint was that with the old version of artisteer - I couldnt not design any mobile optimized themes.

I have not tried the new one yet, however, I just wanted to be able to create a 100% mobile optimized theme.

Drupal and Wordpress can easily detect the type of device viewing the site, and change to a new theme accordingly. All I need is to build two themes instead of one.

Previously, I was hand coding the entire mobile theme versions because artisteer's even very narrow themes were having issues with some mobile devices.

Do a need a "responsive" theme? No, I just need to be able to easily generate a second theme which is more mobile compatible, very easily.

Artisteer needs to save themselves a ton of money / time and incorporate a Grid Based Framework as their foundation moving forward before it's to late. Enough Said. 8-) Just kidding.

Here's a great read on the HOW TO of "Responsive Design". I highly recommend reading it if your truly interested in what RWD is all about and WHY it needs to happen and is happening as we speak. HTML5 and CSS3 are a GODSEND. CSS3 @media quires do away with all the stupid hacking javascript.

Seriously get enlightened.. This is a 3 or 4 part article that easily digestible and understood by anyone that can say the words "HTML". :-@

I have it and it doesn't work right. The sites that I have designed this way the user3 menu drop down won't work. It looks terrible.

http://cadrainfarms.com is one example.
http://lenshauling.ca/ is another.
