I need to remove the link from a couple of horizontal menu buttons.
My wife is a writer and wants fiction and non-fiction as main menu buttons but only wants the sub items (books and features that she's written) of these main buttons to link to pages. How do I set this up?

Hi,

You should use custom menu. Go to wp-admin => Appearance menus. Create a menu, name it, for example, Main. Then on the left you can see Theme Locations. Select your Main menu for Primary navigation.

A bit lower you can see Custom Links including url and Label. For the url, remove http:// and enter this sign #
For the Label enter Fiction, then click Add to Menu, now you have a fake menu item that leads nowhere.

Do the same for non-fiction menu item.

Then create submenu items. To do this tick posts or/and categories, add them to menu, then drag each item under fiction and non-fiction correspondingly, and place them a bit to the right (it has indent on the left).
Save the menu.

In WP admin,
appearance / theme options / navigation menu...
"disable parent menu link in horizontal navigation menu"

That will disable the top horiz menu item, but keep the drop down links if that's what you're trying to achieve?
