A mobile template should be around 320px(iPhone)width -right now Artisteer will not make them below 500px. also the navigation menu usually would be a vertical layout(buttons on top of one another). Fonts usually a bit bigger for phones and Images would take up to 90% of the page width...

Hope this helps in you decision to create a version of Artisteer that can make templates optimized for mobile devices...

Yes, mobile websites are going ballistic now. The real key is having one website for both desktop and mobile use, and having the website deliver the correct display to the appropriate device.

I use a WordPress plugin called wpTouch for that, and it works nicely with Artisteer themes.

It would be nice to design those "alternate themes" in Artisteer for mobile, and have the system adapt, depending on the device.

For those of you who say good smartphones will display the whole screen... yes, they do, but the type is tiny, or, if you stretch it to increase the size, scrolling back and forth is a pain that will lose you visitors.

The idea is to give both desktop users and mobile users an experience they enjoy, and using Artisteer, to customize that so you have the appearance you want.

And without developing two separate websites. One website, two visual experiences. Add a page, it's rendered appropriately for both types of devices. For those of you who say good smartphones will display the whole screen... one are

Aristeer is mainly for designing the look and layout of a site or blog but lacks in the functionality department, especially when it comes to creating premium type wordpress themes. There are themes out there that don't have the design ability that Artisteer has but you can create mobile sites and facebook pages all within the same wp theme.

A mobile version of a website is completely different than a conventional website you view on a computer monitor. The mobile site is designed to be more simpler with only the most important information being provided. All pages from your conventional website most likely will not be inclulded in your mobile site.

As far as that goes less information will also be included on those pages that you do include in both your mobile or conventional site. So the point is that there is a huge difference between a mobile site and conventional site in terms of design, layout and functions.

Artisteer has some really nice looking templates and theme designs but doesn't completely do what I need it to do.

That's the point and that's the reason why Artisteer should not be used for this. I think the earlier point was: why someone should use a web design product to create simple templates that do not have web design? Why do you need Artisteer for creating a simple version of your website that doesn't have a web design?

Other WordPress themes can do this because they are themes, not visual web design products. Thus a theme can have some features not related to web design, while Artisteer is used for visually selecting web design elements. For example when creating a mobile theme you'd end up with visually not selecting anything in Artisteer, thus saying "I'm not using any web design features in my mobile template therefore why do I need Artisteer to create mobile template".

Just allow us to make the minimum width what ever we want please...

I mean, we can go in an hack the css afterwards, but why should we have to?

Also, please let us select from more separator characters the horizontal menu... it'd be nice to be able to use it for a breadcrumb (or is there an easier way to make breadcrumbs?)

One approach you could more easily take on this with WordPress mobile templates is supporting the WP Touch mobile themes. WP Touch and WP Touch Pro take care of offering a mobile theme to mobile browsers and their themes are basically specialized and simplified WordPress themes using the same function calls and hierarchy.

In spite of what several posters here recommended about absolute screen widths the WP Touch plugin/package follows my own approach which is to use percentage based widths and then embed images/videos scaling to the width.

Makes for easier theming.

Last week I purchased a mobile template program complete with 3 hours of video that showed me how to set all of this up my cost on Warrior Forum 17 bucks and I have one sold for 400 and another done and negotiating for 500. This from an Artisteer WordPress raptor.

So until Artisteer steps up with the smaller screen widths I already will be using my 17 dollar templates to pull in the local business.

Justification for going after mobile resolutions: HALF of all searches right now are done on mobile devices. 72 % of those searches result in sales. That is why my current campaign is Go Mobile or get left behind

This site has Artisteer Wordpress as main site and this mobile version is on subdomain

You know, Standard Edition already allows you to set the page width to 200px. Obviously people want the functionality of the Standard Edition without paying for it though it seems.

Or as Karen said above... Make it fluid width.

Artisteer,

To your message (quoted further down) about why there should be web design for mobile browsers and whether there should be any at all.

See, to some extent you are right.

Most websites should and are easy to be viewed from a mobile browser. The simpler the design the better.

Other websites are totally unsuitable for mobile browsers. Some websites are simply designed to be too complex and rely on the fact that the user has a large screen, convenient standard keyboard, a mouse, etc. Some have functionality that almost restricts you from accessing it from a mobile device since they show huge pop-ups, have hyperlink areas that are too large or too small for a touch screen etc.

The best approach to me is to design a website for regular web browsers, if you expect users to be accessing it from desktops and laptops, and have a second version of design for mobile browsers. Also have the sever-side code detect that the website is accessed from a mobile device and use the mobile design in that case. Offer the users an option to chose either design.

Mobile designs can of course be very different, but in successful and admired mobile oriented sites we see usually:
- a single column design; of elements stacked vertically; like the horizontal wide, with easy to read labels buttons and hyperlinks we see on mobile apps;
- pages are much simpler usually focusing on one main content area and possibly a few navigation or content map elements at the bottom.
- design is usually flexible width so that the numerous different mobile device sizes are satisfied.

Good example is the BlogSuperApp.com site and most all sub-domain blogs on it. They all can be viewed on a regular browser with a regular blog theme and when accessed from a mobile browser viewed with a very well designed mobile theme.

I definitely think Artisteer should have theme style that is made for mobile browsers. Detecting of the mobile and regular browser can be left to plugins.

I am guessing, if you simply allow for a flexible width single column theme, with widget areas that simply stack above and bellow the main content, and all buttons and hyperlinks are allowed to be the same 100% width blocks that stack on each other, that will work.

All those mobile devices include a web browser specifically to display websites the same way as on a Mac or PC. We can view all websites on iphone, ipad and android. If we have issues with viewing a website on those devices, we report those issues to device manufacturers.

Some popular websites offer mobile versions of their websites, for example http://m.facebook.com/ that doesn't have a web design and doesn't utilize templates.
Thus how exactly a web design product could create "iphone, ipad and android template"? What should be included in a template that doesn't have a web design? And why should web design products create templates without web design?

Or are we missing the point and just don't understand what this request is about...?

A mobile enabled template is one that shows up one way on the computer but is optimized for smaller "mobile" devices such as an IPad or Nook. It's a matter of coding to where the site recognizes the request from a mobile device and optimizes to fit that screen on the fly.

It's not new tech and most mobile are doing this. Is Artisteer creating HTML5? If not that may be the route to go and in a hurry!!!!

It's also possible for the coding to shunt the device to a subsite with a more enabled template for that size. Simply making the template smaller only makes the text smaller. Don't want people to be looking at the site with their face 2" from the device! Just sayin!!! :-@

All Art templates looks good in smartphones. Beleive that point is to have a template for mobile devices without all heavy stuff, header, many menu modules (footer, etc). In short posibility to chose in Artisteer what mobile device would see. Strip many things from template to speed up pageload, and use viewing area as best as possible.

Some generic smartphone template, to begin with. Later it can be tweaked manually for different devices. It is impossible to satisfy them all 100%. Some JED extensions use huge database of all mobile devices and adapt templets to them. Artisteer cannot do this, but some generic smartphone template is OK to begin with.

I will say so far, all my sites have always looked good in most mobile browsers, however sometimes things like logos don't always line up. In general it works well but I say please and yes we need this feature. I agree your app is probably the best on the market. Lets keep it that way!

Can you also give the ability to add wave/music files to the template and buttons and any rollovers....some clients want flashy noise on their sites.

Thanks,

Kimberly

hi there everybody.

I have a question related to the way a joomla/artisteer site shows up on a mobile device. It seems that the mobile devices stretches up the text/font if it has the space to do so. text that sits in a fixed width column stays small, but text in an article on the main page gets bigger and thus if you view the site on a smartphone it gets all out of proportion. you can check out http://www.kuipers.nu/index.php/contact to see what i mean.

Anyone have suggestions ?
Thanks in advance!

Artisteer gives us the possibility of adding custom CSS. Playing around with them could help alot. Have a look at
http://perishablepress.com/press/2009/08/02/the-5-minute-css-mobile-makeover/
See if this helps. One could hiode some elements, reset font sizes etc. using the
@media handheld {

.selector-01 {
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
}
}
Hope this helps.

We have been using Artisteer to create mobile websites for over a year now and here are a couple of tips.

You can see our mobile magazine at work by scanning the QR Code.

1. Do not make your template a certain size. Make it 100% so it will stretch and fit any phone.

2. Adjust your CSS to cope with different sizes.

3. Adjust your header to recognize the mobile platform.

I absolutely love Artisteer. But, for simultaneous design of desktop and mobile websites, I have to rely on another product, SiteSpinner Pro. While SiteSpinner Pro does an excellent job creating Desktop, Mobile, and combined websites, it doesn't have the range of template creation flexibility that I've come to love with Artisteer.

As more and more of my clients are demanding dual functionality from their websites, I want to know how long I'll need to wait for Artisteer to offer such capabilities.

All my Artisteer website clients are now getting a mobile site (using Artisteer)

Hope this helps.

As first, Artisteer does support mobile design. I asked them and they answered this to me:

"Artisteer 4.0 does create mobile friendly themes.
Please see the option "Responsive Web Design" in File - Export - Options - General."

I tried to access a sample theme from my mobile and I got excellent mobile design. So, try it on your own. If I have to tell you this one more time, here it is:

Interesting that you put it that way. I created www.sell-my-books.com on my PC using Artisteer. I have a Windows Mobile 7 smart phone and an Android tablet. I had been having a problem with the background picture and support helped with that. Once it was fixed, I checked it out on my Android tablet and Windows Phone 7 phone and it was perfect, as I wanted it to look. However, IOS shows it differently, sigh....

Have a look and see what YOU think. All I did was use their tip in the template itself to always make the background the full screen. The rest of the site is set to FLUID and it all seems to compensate nicely.
