Why static html?

I met a girl yesterday who has a website already. A static html site where so can't make any changes herself.

She's really pissed that she paid so much money and no she can't even get a hold of the webmaster to make any changes. ALl her prices have changed since then. Now she's stuck with people coming in and demanding the old price since it's on the website.

She want to know why he would do this to her? Why didn't he just create a database in the first place? Why did he take all her money and leave her with a static website?

What should I tell her?

Because most web designers create static html sites unless the client requests/needs a CMS. Yes, clients may update their own sites with a CMS but there are issues that must be taken into account such as security and whether hosting can meet the demands of the site traffic.

Eek, haven't heard of anyone charging for static sites in nearly a decade - not even Flash ones. Does she have a legally-binding contract with the guy? In any case, she's learned a valuable lesson for what to look for in the future. Hopefully she can get some of her investment back and move on.

yeppers. like clippy says, all websites today are based on wordpress or joomla. there hasn't been a web developer around creating static sites for more than a decade. yep, that's for realz.

Also, it's kind of weird to staunchly support static sites in a thread about a client dissatisfied primarily because her site was static, and in this case a clearly unacceptable solution.

I have 800 hosted customers. All their websites are CMS driven. Only 25 out of that group like to update their own website. All others come to me and ask me to do it. Is that a dead business model? Not for my money. Many of my customers can't even write an email. They just learned to reach me by mobile phone.

All websites out there are Joomla or Wordpress? Comeon, you have a distorted perception. There are 8.000.000.000 websites out there. There are at around 50.000.000 Joomla and Wordpress sites. Not even. That is 0,6%. The other 99,4% use other systems.

Also, I meant to say up there - after coding my own CMS, clients were more willing to do their own updates, as there were less features to confuse them, and the layouts were more conducive to their workflow than that of, say, Joomla or DNN or Drupal.
