I have 2 questions regarding blocks, is there a way to set a different background for the different blocks and is it possible to add more blocks such as the footer?

In version one you don't have the control to set different backgrounds for the 'blocks'. In the beta, you do have that control, but not to the point for individual (or laternating) blocks. The would need to be done manually in the CSS.
Adding blocks all depends on if you are working in Wordpress (which controls the widgets in the sidebars) or in HTML. In HTML you should be able to create more blocks by cutting and pasting the block code manually. In Wordpress, that is totally controlled by Wordpress.
