It would be nice to be able to import a background image as well. Will this capability be available any time soon, or is there a way to do this that I have not figured out from within the program?

Custom background images are not a feature yet.
It can be done with some editing of the CSS file, but if you aren't familiar with CSS, then I wouldn't do it.
